Never before in history has there been so many tools, equipment , techniques and channels available for communication. Yet, surprisingly, communication between people remains a huge problem.  Could it be that we are focussing more on technique, style, technology rather than people?                                     What constitutes communication? A communication has three components, the sender, the message and the receiver.  Unfortunately most teachers of management and communications focus primarily on the message and the sender. What to send and how to send it?  Be aggressive, seductive etc etc. they teach. There appears to be little focus on the receiver. Effective communication depends primarily on the recipient. If the recipient is unable or unwilling to listen then the message is lost if not rendered ineffective, just like the case of the tree crashing...

Attack Problems,  Not People

If you are sincere and work for the larger good of the people, do not make money for yourself or other backers then you are a liability. You will most likely be tried and executed.  If you wheel and you deal, and if you fake your sincerity and make yourself and other backers fabulously rich you will be wanted to be made the head of state.  What do you want to do?

Every child learns about the all powerful genie trapped inside a bottle or lamp. This genie needs a master to release it from the bottle. The master gets his or her one or three wishes and then what? The genie that has power to give whatever is desired is obviously very powerful. It does not want to return to the lamp or bottle and the master cannot force it to return. The genie MUST have purpose or else it becomes a nuisance to itself and to everyone. We humans are not much different from the genie in the bottle.  Once discovered and released like the Genie the power of individuals and teams and organisations can be immense and once they get committed to a cause they are virtually unstoppable. Most of us have some form of genius within us, but we have to discover it. Sadly most of us are in a kind of stupor imposed  on us by our social conditioning. It was 1984 and the third anniversary of us brothers joining of the family owned and managed manufacturing business in Pune, India. I was 26 and responsible for day to day operations of the plant. Excited to be given an opportunity to start working at last, with our enthusiasm and hard work we were able to double output each year. Initially growth came from taking up the slack in the system and then later from some capacity additions. Our efficiencies left much to be desired. Just keeping pace with volume demand was soaking up all our time, we responded with the main tool in our tool box, ‘HARD WORK’, which comes easy to the young, for youth loves expending energy. However there is a limit, to what senseless hard work can achieve. Demand was galloping, and there were no more funds available for capital expansion. We had already borrowed to the hilt.
