Only the weak are cruel. The strong ....

Strength is vital for safety, security, resources and mates in our social environment.   Strong and weak are relative terms. Every being possesses some strength.  When we say 'strong' we mean the capacity to withstand or to exert relatively higher force or energy than others can. It is natural for a creature to try and dominate other members of its species,   so as to obtain the best and more than others, while the weak survive by compromising. Unequal and unfair it may seem, but this is the natural world of all living beings. The more primitive the nature, the greater the reliance on physical strength. Weapons of various kinds are now used to  physically, emotionally, psychologically etc. to dominate others.  All designs for domination are a win-lose proposition, because they are born out of conflict. This is the premise of conquests and empire building, and it is always destructive. Though this is seen as a strength it's actually weakness. There is alway...

Why, social distancing will most likely save your life?

With Coronavirus on the rampage and government ordered lockdown in place, many people are feeling disturbed. They  complain incessantly about the inconvenience. To them I would say, "Nothing can be more inconvenient than death". Here are some sobering facts about COVID-19 Coronavirus's trail of destruction that, at the time of writing this article. Here are the global figures, (India's figures in brackets) on the impact so far. Infections Number of Infections, currently stand at 1,014,493  (India 2,567) Numbers of infections are doubling every week.  If the disease remains unchecked and if there is widespread person to person contact, then theoretically speaking, at this rate barring those who exist in isolation the entire world's population will be infected within 14 weeks. Many people will be slightly or even completely unaware that they have been infected. They will at worst, experience some mild discomfort and go on with their normal live...

Make the garden of our country beautiful.

I recently spent a day with a very interesting Uncle who came visiting from America. Dr. Harcharan Singh is  knowledgeable on so many subjects, but gardening his passion. We mostly discussed his beautiful and highly productive garden. Spending 2 hours each morning my Uncle grows virtually all the fresh vegetables and fruits his family and friends need. He does not use any artificial fertilizers nor use any pesticides. Anxious about increasing presence of pesticides in our environment which invariably leads to all sorts of medical problems, such as infertility, organ failure and cancer, I asked him how he was able to avoid using pesticides? He briefed me on crop /plant rotation which is periodic changing of types of plants so to deny pests  the chance of breeding. He changes the mix of the plants all the time. The reason we do this is that every crop or type of plant attracts particular types of pests. When a plant grows it becomes a home for those pests, but they nee...

Outraged people often lose their freedom

Every day some outrageous events occur. The media starts a frenzy and the masses get begin to holler for blood. A sacrificial head is needed on the block or something has to be done. Politicians find it expedient to bow to public and media pressure and some knee jerk reaction is announced. The government administration swings into action drafting new laws and imposing curbs and the mobs are silenced. Then peace returns briefly to the land before the next uproar. The cycle repeats endlessly. There is a dangerous pattern. With each action our liberties, freedom are being taken away. Like killing the people with a thousand cuts, until one day all we have is a compliant, submissive and frightened people. It is becoming impossible to exist without breaking some law or the other or causing offense to      some individuals or groups. Trial by media is the new norm, and inquisitions are on the rise. In a travesty of justice people are now first judged guilty and must prove t...

Why is it so damn hot?

O ur time can be divided by our focus on ourselves, our family, work, socialising and recreation.  There is however a factor which cannibalises our peace of mind and our time, called 'nonsense'. 'Nonsense work' is time and effort spent on having to cope with problems which make no sense whatsoever, they  should never have occurred in the fist place. These are headaches and problems created sometimes by we ourselves but usually caused by others.  Unfortunately we are dependant on others to meet our requirements and solve problems we face, because we now live in a society of organisations filled with specialists.  The larger and more complex the organisation that we have to deal with, the more bureaucracy there is, and to justify their existence, create enormous amounts of nonsensical work for people. The frustration with bureaucracies is the solution provider is completely disconnected from the person/s who face problems that need to be resolved. The disconne...

Biometric systems and reforming Government.

The massive fiscal crisis in Greece and impending crisis in Portugal, and Spain got many people thinking. Their situation is very small as compared to the problems and sad state of management of the government in the developing world. All these are symptoms of dysfunctional and irresponsible governance. Everything with the government is so complex and huge that a brief article will not suffice. It’s not easy to prescribe a simple solution for complex problems that plague society; however here is some food for thought. The other day, there was an article in the newspapers. It seems that the government was in the process of installing biometric devices in all their offices. Primary reason was to ensure that government employees, teachers etc. attend their offices for the duration for which they are paid. This raises the question as to; why should the government deem these steps necessary? It makes for an interesting management case study, hence this article. What are biometric devices? T...
