Making things happen

Generally speaking here are three types of individuals, organisations and countries. Those, who make things happen. Those, who watch things happen and Those, who wonder what happened. In the natural world, things seemingly happen by themselves We witness a natural order interspersed with natural chaos. In the world of humans, things are the mostly the result of human thought and action. From my own experience the individuals, families, organisations and states who are able to successfully make things happen, possess 3 essential traits. Intellectual integrity:  T o conceptualise, study, analyse, formulate strategy, tactics and draw up plans on what, where, why, when, where, who and how of matters. It also requires the ability to adapt and modify plans if the situation demands it.   Emotional integrity:  Of being passionate enough to convince and enthuse all entities that are essential to join and support the plans.  Ruthlessness:  The ability to remain foc...

The Curse of Socialism

My journey to understand began with the question, 'What has hobbled India's re-emergence as a great nation,   in spite of being re-independent for past 70 years?' There are probably many reasons, but one dominating and disturbing cause is India's adoption of Western Socialism. An alien and foreign ideology sought to be imposed on India and all Indians. We are often told that we are world's largest democracy. Actually we are the world's largest socialist democratic republic. So if our leaders have chosen socialism it must be good for us? Right?  Wrong. No its not. Socialism is a curse not only for India but for the whole world. Don't believe it?  Lets start with, what is Socialism? _________________________ Socialism   is a range of political, economic and social systems where everything is owned in common by all people, and supposedly everyone is equal. Everything will be owned by the state and its arms.  Utopian it may sound, in reality it ...

Conquered. Again?

The nation which makes the best use of the sword will always subjugate the nation which has more gold and less courage.   ~ Voltaire India was known as the 'golden bird', 'land of milk and honey' and thousand other glorious names, because it was so prosperous. Prosperity bestows comfort. Excess comfort brings laziness which unfortunately erodes courage. This attracts predators. Predators bring destruction. This has been the story of India. ______________________________ India was the most advanced civilisation of its time for thousands of years, yet it was unable to repel Muslim and Christian invaders and their subsequent occupation for a thousand years. Why? The invaders possessed the following traits that assured certain victory to them. A cunning and ruthless disposition.  They entered into agreements and signed treaties which they almost always dishonoured  Political sanction was granted by the rulers of the invaders and invasions and forced c...

Backseat Driving India

I am a happily married man. Does this mean that I and my wife do not disagree? We disagree on most things yet we are not uncomfortable with our differences, save one. The way I drive a car is the subject of most of our disagreements. I have often offered to let her drive or use our chauffeur. However she insists that I drive in a manner that suits her expectations. The only problem is that in 30 years I still have not figured out what exactly it is that I must do.  Backseat driving is common all over the world. No one is happy and the results are often disappointing and sometimes dangerous. The situation is not restricted to couples alone but also to organisations and even nations. We Indians face the same situation in our nation's decade old leadership. Though not husband and wife, they make a political couple. Dr. Manmohan Singh and Mrs. Sonia Gandhi*. Sonia is a person completely lacking in personal merit, therefore not surprisingly the puppet o...

I am not a policeman.

It was the first ever lecture by our teacher Professor HVK Rao in 1976.  Professor Rao had barely begun his lecture and his back was turned to the class as he wrote something on the blackboard. Suddenly a piece of chalk flew from the back of the classroom and almost hit the professor's hand. The missile was launched to unnerve Mr. Rao and more importantly determine the balance of power in the class room. Cool Professor Rao remained unfazed and responded; "Gentlemen, I can do two things, I can either teach or be a policeman. I am paid to teach, not police. Most of you have come from afar to get an education. Those of you who are not really interested in these classes but are here because of the pressure of attendance targets, you are free to leave. I  relieve you of the college's demand for attending 80% of the classes and will treat  all of you as having attended my classes irrespective of your actual attendance." About half a dozen trouble makers left the...
